Perennial woody plants are enormously important and beneficial to mankind. Trees are sources of essential products including lumber, pulp, food for humans and wildlife, fuel, medicines, waxes, oils, gums, resins, and tannins. As components of parks and forests, trees contribute immeasurably to our recreational needs. They ornament landscapes, provide screening of unsightly objects and scenes, ameliorate climate, reduce consumption of energy for heating and air conditioning of buildings, and abate the harmful effects of pollution, flooding, and noise. They also protect land from erosion and wind and provide habitats for wildlife. Shrubs bestow many of the same benefits (McKell et al., 1972). Unfortunately the growth of woody plants, and hence their potential benefits to society, commonly is far below optimal levels. To achieve maximal benefits from communities of woody plants by efficient management, we need to understand how their growth is influenced by heredity and environment as well as by cultural practices.
